Velveteen Lops

The Velveteen Lop rabbit is an ARBA RECOGNIZED breed. The standard was approved and published in Domestic Rabbits in the January-February 2003 issue.  When they pass three presentations, they will be SANCTIONED and eligible to win championship certificates (legs) at ARBA shows.  Velveteens continue to be eligible to be shown in exhibition classes.  Look for me with them at California shows!

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:  Velveteens are shown in solid pattern and broken pattern varieties in the same colors as the English Lop. Broken pattern rabbits must have at least 10% color on the body. They must have color on the head, and ears are to be solid colored.

The body is “mandolin” type. That means the profile resembles a pear cut in half and laid on the cut side. There is a small rise at the shoulders which transitions to a larger rise over the hips, just like a pear. From the top, the sides should taper slightly from the hips to the shoulders. Since it is a semi-arched breed, is should be posed with the forelegs and hocks flat on the table.

The head is wedged shaped tapering towards the muzzle. Ears must be at least 14 inches long (tip to tip) and about 25% as wide. Ears are soft and pliable and should open towards the front.

The legs and bone are to be medium weight and carried parallel to the body.  Toenails on the broken pattern may either be light or dark colored; the front and rear nails may have different amounts of pigment.

Fur is to be dense, straight, upright and springy to the touch. It is about ˝ inch long. The hair of the undercoat and guard coat is to be the same length.

For the official standard please see the January-February 2003 edition Domestic Rabbits.
